Auditable feature flags across users and teams
Release safety
TL;DR
- Feature flags made releases safer but could become hidden product logic.
- I needed the available flags and their runtime values to stay auditable.
- I catalogued flags in code and resolved overrides across user, team, and default scopes.
- The result was safer rollout control with better cleanup signals after launch.
Feature flags help teams ship safely, but they can become hidden product logic when no one knows which flags exist or how they resolve.
Where it started
Flags controlled important behaviour, but without a clear catalog they could become difficult to discover, validate, or retire.
What needed to change
The flag system keeps a code-level catalog of available flags and validates it against runtime definitions. Overrides can resolve across user, team, and default scopes.
What I built
Flags are declared in code with names and expected shape. Runtime configuration is checked against that catalog, and the resolver chooses the most specific available value for the current context.
What changed
Teams can roll out work gradually without turning flags into mystery state. The catalog also makes cleanup easier after a flag has served its purpose.
What I would watch
Governance only helps if old flags are removed. Otherwise the catalog becomes a museum of past releases.
